Over the past two years, I've been involved with Wav Zine, a music, arts, and culture collective based in San Luis Obispo, California. Our focus is to amplify the voice of the SLO underground. We engage in various activities including publishing articles, hosting art galleries featuring local artists, creating films, interviewing artists, curating playlists, organizing shows, and producing a seasonal zine.
I initially joined Wav as an art team member, where my primary role involves creating graphics for social media and collaborating with the team to produce the seasonal zine. This entails tasks such as selecting themes, creating mood boards and style guides, and designing document spreads. Additionally, I provide constructive feedback to my peers to ensure the quality of our output.
In addition to my role in the art team, I also serve as the Physical Media Director within the inner management team at Wav. In this capacity, I'm tasked with producing marketing materials for Wav's numerous events, including flyers, stickers, pins, and more. I also handle the screen-printing process for Wav's merchandise, which is worn by community members across SLO. Moreover, I produce access badges for shows that require security measures. All of these designs are either created by myself or by other talented members within Wav.
In the fall of 2023, in an effort to engage Cal Poly freshmen with Wav, I initiated a marketing campaign and coined the phrase, “What the f#@% is Wav,” encapsulating the unabashed rowdiness of our collective and its notoriously undefinable nature. This campaign led to the highest number of applicants to Wav ever recorded, and the phrase became Wav’s unofficial slogan.
